May Webinar - Intro to Glaze Concepts with Callie Beller

APA membership required. If you are not a current member, please add both workshop fee and membership fee to your cart.

Saturday May 14th -10AM MST

This one hour workshop will cover the basic components of a glaze and how the pieces work together to create different effects. We will cover:

  • tips on how to make glaze mixing and application go more smoothly

  • application and how it affects the final product

  • how different materials can affect a glaze

  • best practices when choosing and mixing your own glazes

  • a little on health and safety

Nerdy glaze science and chemistry stuff will be presented in approachable and understandable language! It’s ideal for anyone who’s interested in learning to glaze, but has been daunted by some of those online conversations where glaze chemistry nerds start a technical argument, and everyone else gets confused/bored.

(It’s me. I’m one of those nerds.)

If you’re new to ceramics, or have been working for a while using commercial or studio glazes, this is a gentle and approachable explanation to the “Why did THAT happen?” Question. This is an introduction, but links and resources for further self directed learning will be provided. They’re meant to help weed through the questionable and partially accurate resources on the internet.

PRESENTER: Callie Beller is the owner of Diesel Clay, and has been mixing her own glazes since she started in clay 30 years ago. She has a BFA from AUArts, and while other people do sudoku to relax on a Sunday morning, she looks at other people’s Stull charts to help figure out what’s gone wrong (or right).

Zoom link will be emailed upon registration.

March Webinar - CRIT 101 with Monika Smith

Are you stuck? Don’t know where to go next with your work? Have a technical problem you just can’t find an answer too?
Join Monika Smith and her Crit 101 presentation.

What’s a crit? A useful tool used in art colleges to talk about work in progress with peers and an instructor. It’s meant to inspire, figure out, challenge, dig deep and get to the next phase of your clay exploration. Monika is an APA member and graduate of ACAD Ceramics 2008, with honors. She’s had formal and information ‘crits’ at college and beyond and has provided them. If you’ve never had one, take away some tips and ideas for your tool box. Through questions and discussions during this talk and by looking at some very famous ceramics, you can learn some approaches that can help you. This is a participatory and supportive way of looking at ceramics and move from a stuck position, find new ideas that enhance your work and get that help you didn’t know you needed.

Date: March 26 at 10:00 am, via Zoom.
